What is Botox?

Reducing the first signs of aging in the upper face and forehead is easy and painless with BOTOX injectable treatments at Visionary Eye Surgeons. Our ophthalmologists are proud to offer BOTOX treatments to our patients.

This facial rejuvenation treatment helps patients achieve the gorgeous results they desire. BOTOX is a specialized strain of type A botulinum toxin that temporarily reduces the movements of the muscles that create expressions in the upper face region. The lines made from these repetitive facial expressions are referred to as “rhytids” since they are caused by muscle activity. Eventually, these dynamic lines remain visible, even when the face is totally relaxed. BOTOX injectable treatments can dramatically smooth the depth of these lines by stopping facial expressions and giving the skin on top of the muscles a chance to relax and soften itself without interference.

Best Candidates for Botox

BOTOX injections are great for patients who hope to diminish and soften the visible look of wrinkles, lines, and moderate folds on their upper face without undergoing surgery. BOTOX is often thought of as a preventive anti-aging treatment, even if you are younger — keep in mind how often you make facial expressions. It's a terrific, non-invasive treatment if you have forehead wrinkles or parallel lines between the brows. It's also an excellent choice for lines that form around the eyes (Crow's feet).

Our Injection Technique

BOTOX treatments are available as an outpatient procedure at our clinic. If it is your first time visiting us in for BOTOX, we usually perform the treatment at the same appointment as your initial consultation. During the treatment, we will ask you to make various expressions using your upper face, like frowning, squinting, or smiling, to help us determine where we should place the injections. We commonly administer BOTOX in between the brows where the number "11" appears, around the eyes (Crow's feet), and across the forehead.

First, we will cleanse your face and inject the BOTOX using a fine needle, followed by a cool compress to help reduce bruising, swelling, and discomfort. You can ask for a numbing cream to make the procedure more comfortable, but generally, patients do not find it necessary. BOTOX treatments typically take about 10 – 15 minutes.

What to Expect

After your injection, you can return to your daily schedule; although, you should avoid strenuous activity for at least one day. We recommend sleeping with your head propped up for the first night and not touching your face, which can accidentally spread the treatment to other areas. The injected sections of your face may appear slightly bruised, swollen, or red for 2 – 3 days, but you will not experience any lasting or serious side effects. In most cases, it takes about 5 – 7 days before the final results of BOTOX become visible. The results generally last 3 – 4 months. You should talk to your BOTOX injector about how often to schedule follow-up appointments at Ophthalmology Associates of the Valley to maintain your results.

Medical Uses for Botox

In some circumstances using BOTOX is used for the treatment of two conditions that can affect your vision. Benign Essential Blepharospasm is a medical condition that causes involuntary blinking of the eyes. By doing injections of BOTOX into the muscles that close the eyes it reduces the involuntary movement to allow you to maintain your vision. The other medical use for BOTOX is hemifacial spasm. This condition can have a neurological basis so if your MRI does not show any vascular abnormalities the idiopathic form of this disease can also be effectively managed with BOTOX injections. Typically, these treatments need to be repeated every 3-6 months to maintain the effect of the treatment.
